Here's an update on this new feature which is still "coming".
While it seems like this would be fairly trivial, it is in fact reasonably complex to implement. A lot of that is our fault with the initial way that the database and the processing pipeline were built.
We want to deliver you the following four things:
- Add a link directly
- Delete a link directly
- Delete a source
- Delete your whole account
Why so hard? Well our initial design intent was to monitor and extract links from other networks – we didn't see direct link adding as critical and give it as much thought as we should of (we thought Delicious would be around forever too and were comfortable trying to value add, not trying to replace). It's meant that to get the add feature implemented we've had to significantly restructure our code base; we don't want new links you've added going to the "back" of the queue where it might take several hours to show, so this has had to be re-organised.
It also turns out that unlike a straight bookmarking service (where you save the link and it shows) we want to also have it indexed at the same time to be searchable. This increases the complexity further too.
And delete is wrapped up in this as well – if you delete a link, it also has to be removed from the search index.
Once the add and delete links is resolved, the delete a source, then delete your account becomes much more manageable.
We have now completed the back end changes required to support this, so there has been significant rework. We are now planning to deploy the front end changes to enable this sometime in the new 24 hours, all going smoothly.
So thanks everyone for your patience, we are small team and absolutely trying to do our best for you all and make Trunk.ly a great success.
Cheers,
Tim
I’m a delicious refugee who just signed up. It’s good to be able to read about upcoming features. However I don’t know what to make of your reference to “sometime in the new [next?] 24 hours”, as your blog posts do not appear to have any dates associated with them. Perhaps you could add dates to your posts, too? Thanks. So far, as an informer (vs. meformer) on Twitter, I really like having a searchable stream of sites I’ve linked to … and will look forward to being able to add links directly (outside of Twitter) when that’s available.
It’s this free posterous theme – creating a blog was low down the list. It’s right down the bottom “posted 5 hours ago by Tim Bull”So I guess that means we’ve got 19 hours left! Thanks for the feedback – we’ll almost certainly migrate to a better theme soon.Glad you’re enjoying the links.Cheers,Tim
Thanks for the prompt response, and I don’t want to distract you [any further] from making progress on adding the new features to the service (so please don’t feel you need to respond to this response). If / when you have a chance to turn more attention to your Posterous themes and settings, you might want to visit the site when you are not logged in, and/or perhaps from a different browser, as I don’t see any absolute or relative dates or times anywhere on the blog, as a visitor using Firefox 3.6 on a Mac. FWIW, I’ve been using the Clean Sheet theme on my Posterous milliblog, which includes dates but not times.
Same here. Dates in the blog are not visible (Chrome 7 on Ubuntu).
I get it now!Dates aren’t visible at the top level, but if you view this individual post, it should still show “posted 2 days ago” next to the Author name.I’ll pick a different theme anyway.Update on this – it’s still coming. We’ve had a lot of issues in testing, there are significant (already) migration challenges as the database structure changes a lot. So when we thought we were done, that had a big assumption that it went smoothly. It hasn’t. So while we desperately want to get this feature out, we really need to make sure that your data and links are safe when we do. It’s almost there…
Can’t wait for this to be implemented. Happy new year!
PS: If you need people to test some new features, I’m willing to do so
Hi Clair,Those feature went live on the 23rd http://blog.trunk.ly/finally-the-new-features-are-on-line. No need to wait. Happy New Year to you too.Cheers,Tim
